ACADEMIC RESEARCH CONNECTING THE SCIENCES (ARCS) Project began in the fall of 1996 as a Scientific Literacy Staff Development Project funded through the Illinois State Board of Education competitive grant program. Follow-up proposals were submitted and approved for funding in 1997 and 1998, allowing for second- and third-year expansions of the ARCS Project. The original ARCS staff development grant proposal was submitted by Western Illinois University, in collaboration with the Rock Island County Regional Office of Education. Subsequent grants have served to maintain this collaborative effort. In addition, ARCS has facilitated other partnerships with K-12 public schools, institutions of higher education, private corporations, and several non-profit community-based organizations and facilities located within the Illinois Quad-Cities area. The result has been an ever-growing learning community committed to increased scientific literacy, as expressed through the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of all participants. The communication network established among the educators in this learning community has resulted in an extraordinary opportunity to share expertise and communicate meaningful ideas aimed toward the improvement of education in the area. It has been the intent of ARCS that this network will continue to survive and grow beyond the limitations of this project.
