Rock Island ended up in a battle after having an early chance to pull away from visiting Galesburg. Rocky jumped to a 13-2 lead and were still up 17-7 after the first quarter before going cold from the field in the second quarter. In fact, the Rocks were 0-16 from the floor in that frame. However, the defense helped keep the Streaks in check so that the Rocks still maintained the lead going to the locker room.
The second half saw the teams go back and forth, and eventually Galesburg took a three point lead with 2:00 remaining. After Kevin Mitchell nailed a three to tie the game, Galesburg held the ball. The Streaks made two free throws to go back up by two, but Lynn Watson answered from the line to tie the game with :21 left. Galesburg once again grabbed a two point lead with free throws before Watson nailed a shot in the lane with :06 left to send the game to overtime.
Andre Richardson scored 7 points in the overtime to help the Rocks jump to an early lead. Galesburg ended up getting a three point shot at the buzzer that hung on the rim before falling out. Mitchell paced the Rocks with 16 points while Watson (12 points), Richardson (12 points), and Jonathan Burnett (11 points) all reached double figures. Rock Island came up short in the final game of the 2005 Iowa-Illinois Shootout at Augustana College. Despite struggling offensively in the first half and battling some foul trouble, the Rocks only trailed 24-20 at the half, thanks to a good first half effort from Kevin Mitchell.
The third quarter didn't go much better for the Rocks as the Bulldogs built a 40-25 lead heading into the final quarter. Rocky, however, had some fight left and Andre Richardson helped lead an offensive surge. They were able to pull within one point with just over two minutes left, but a couple of missed opportunities spelled doom as Bettendorf sealed the win from the charity stripe.

Rock Island pulled out the Western Big 6 thriller that saw each team give away chances to win but also make big plays to give themselves a shot at the victory. In the end, it was the Rocks who made enough big plays to win after three overtimes.
The Blue Devils led in the second quarter before the Rocks caught them at the half. From there, it was back and forth with Rocky having the first chance to win the game. After Quincy scored to tie the game with less than a minute to go, the Rocks held for the last shot and were fouled on the rebound. However, they missed both foul shots and the game went to an extra session.
In the first overtime, Rock Island was on the ropes until Andre Richardson hit a trey to tie the game. Then with less than ten seconds to go, Tony Brooks stole the inbounds pass. They pushed the ball up the floor for a quick shot that didn't fall so the game continued.
The Blue Devils scored two quick buckets to jump out, but some missed free throws allowed the Rocks a chance at the end. Richardson again hit a big three pointer to tie the game and send it into a third overtime. In the final frame, Kevin Mitchell got a steal and finished for an old-fashioned three point play, and the Rocks were able to make the plays to hang on.
Richardson led all scorers with 30 points on the night. Jonathan Burnett had a strong game inside with a double-double; 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mitchell added 14 points while Brooks scored 11.

In the fourth quarter, the Maroons finally tied the game at 39. Rock Island had trouble taking care of the ball and getting good shots down the stretch, but was able to pull within 43-41. Rocky moved to 2-0 on the young season with a come from behind win vs. Carver in the afternoon session of the tournament. The Rocks were down 9-0 to start the game and 14-6 after the first eight minutes. They turned in a good defensive effort against the Challengers to get themselves back in the game. Rock Island opened the season with a big fourth quarter effort. After being close to pulling away a number of times in the game, the Rocks struggled in the third quarter with a number of turnovers. With the game tied entering the fourth quarter, Rocky outscored the Mightymen 21-6 in the final frame for the 15 point win.
Jonathan Burnett was the main man for the Rocks with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds for the night. J.J. Vandygriff knocked down 12 points off the bench. Those were the only two Rocks in double figures in a good team effort.
