Dogtooth Violet
Erythronium albidum (Lily family)
Erythronium americanum is yellow and more often seen farther east.
Also named: Adder's tongue, white trout lily, deer tongue, lamb tongue, and white fawn lily.

The leaves are in pairs and are thick, smooth and when young, are often brown and green and somewhat splotchy or molted looking. During the first 2-3 years only one leaf is produced by the plant. A new plant may not flower until the plant is 6-7 years old and even then, only after it is producing two leaves.

The flower appears on one stem and seems to have 6 petals, but in reality it has 3 petals and 3 sepals. The flowers are white with a little pink. If the flower and two leaves are picked, the entire plant will die.

Height: 8 inches

Blooms April-June
