Overview
The Envirothon is a nation wide competition sponsored by Cannon in
which teams of five people compete at a regional, state, and national
levels. During competition teams take five tests, one for each
category. The categories are forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife, and
the current environmental issue that changes yearly. The fifth category
has been such topics as watershed in a changing climate, and
alternative and renewable energy. The teams also must be
prepared
to give an oral presentation detailing how each of the categories is
affected by a specific environmental challenge. This year we were
generously sponsored by the QCCA.

2008 State
This was the third third and final year
for the all senior team. Despite being held in a very hectic time of
year and the replacement off the very talented Hannah Mattison, Rocky
put forward their best performance yet. They got second in the
recreational impacts category missing first by 1.5 points on a 100
point scale, and also got second on their presentation missing first by
.75 points on a 100 point scale. The other categories had strong
performances as well. Overall we got third place in the entire state, a
new record from our region. With underclassmen that are already
outscoring the seniors at regionals, I have high hopes for future teams.

2008 Regionals
Rocky's 5 teams competed with about 40 other teams in Land Use Council 2. One team got first place for the third year in a row. That team also got top score in the 5th category and aquatics. Another Rocky team got top score in soils. For the last time, the all senior team advanced to the State competiton.

2007 State
For two days in May, EAC's team competed with the top fifteen teams in the state. After five tests and a fifteen minute presentation, the final scores were tallied. We received fifth place overall.

2007 Regionals
Rock Island High School entered three teams into the 2007 regional
envirothon. Seven of the fifteen students were competing for the first
time. One team finished 1st and the other two teams tied for 13th out
of 42
teams. The first place team got the top score in the soils and 5th
category tests. After a nerve-racking presentation we learned that we
would be advancing to the state competition on the 2nd and 3rd of
May.

In 2006 Rock Island High School's E.A.C.
entered the Envirothon competition for the first time and had some
unexpected
results. Despite our inexperience,
one of Rock Island's two teams took first place overall as well as top
scores in soils, wildlife, and the 5th category. We advanced
to
the state level.
