  • Free Mac OS X Upgrade
    .
Apple announced last week that they are giving away a free copy of their newest Operating System to teachers and principals. If you have a Macintosh that is less than three years old, this upgrade will run on your computer.

If you have a district iMac or iBook your computer can run OS X. We would like everyone to order an upgrade. If you don't need the upgrade for home, please send the software to the technology department and we can use it on the school computers. The CDs will be shipped to your school.

    Internet Filtering Required by CIPA
    .
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was signed into law on December 21, 2000. In order to receive discounts for Internet Access and Internal Connections services, school authorities must certify that they are enforcing a policy of Internet safety that includes measures to block or filter Internet access for both minors and adults to certain web graphics. The Rock Island School District must comply with CIPA in order to receive E-rate discounts.

We are currently using WebSense to filter computers connecting to the Internet. The filtering now set up on each computer and may be removed. We are in the process of upgrading equipment that will require all Internet requests to go through the filter. Your help is needed to prevent the blocking of useful websites. If you find a site blocked that is needed for instruction, please contact the technology department.

Additional information on the filters will be sent out when the equipment upgrades are scheduled.

    High School Labs Updated
    .
The Fall Break gave the technology department an opportunity to install updated computers in several high school labs. Reconditioned Dell computers were put in one Business lab, the Modular Technology lab, and a Math lab. The Macintosh computers in the Journalism lab were replaced by iMacs.
    What's Next?
    .
The district has several projects currently underway in technology. These include setting up web reports of district data, upgrading computer labs in several elementary schools, replacing the computer lab at Edison Junior High School, and offering technology training after school. Details will be provided in future TechLinks.
The district website is an information source for many wanting to learn more about our schools. We would like to include news stories about your classroom. Please submit information for the web page to the district webmaster at the link below:
