| The first quarter of the 2002-2003 school year has been filled
with many exciting technology activities. This newsletter is being
sent to update you on our current projects and describe some of
the future plans for technology in the Rock Island School
District.
This newsletter also is the first being distributed through a
new e-mail distribution service. I'm interested in your opinion on
this new format. - Mike Breidenstein
| Laptops for Teachers |
 |
This is the second year of our laptops for teachers
program. Last year over 130 teachers received a laptop
computer and this year another 100 teachers were added to
their ranks. For the majority of these teachers the laptop
is their first classroom computer.
The Apple iBook has proven to be the ideal tool for
teachers. Each laptop comes to the teacher with the
applications Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint),
Outlook for e-mail, Internet Explorer, and Making The Grade.
Apple also includes AppleWorks, iMovie, and iTunes on each
computer. All laptops are configured with a wireless network
card that enables the computer to connect to the Internet in
our buildings with wireless access.
We are interested in hearing your success stories
involving the iBook. Tell us how the laptop computer has had
an effect on your teaching. We'll share these in a future
issue of TechLinks

target new users and will be limited to 16 participants. The
classes will be held in the high school library from 8:30
a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The class is repeated, so you would
select one day to attend. CPDU credit is available.

| RICE - Rock Island Area Computing
Educators |
 |
A local chapter of "Illinois Computing Educators" has
been formed for Northern and Western Illinois. We have
chosen the name RICE (for Rock Island Area Computing
Educators). Membership is open to anyone in the field of
education who is interested in using technology to enhance
and expand student learning (administrators, teachers,
librarians, aides, counselors, secretaries, school support
staff, etc.) To be a member of RICE you must also be a
member of ICE.
The purpose of RICE is to: encourage the development and
use of computers and technology in all facets of the
educational process; assist in the professional growth of
its members and others interested parties through the use of
technology and computers; distribute information state wide
about computing and technology; and build a support network
among members.
The next RICE meeting is scheduled at the Rock Island
Regional Office of Education in Moline at 6:30 on Thursday,
November 7
