Indiginious to the Galapagos Islands, the Blue Footed Booby is one of three species of Booby. Others include the Masked Booby and the Red Footed Booby. Boobies are very common on the islands. They are related to pelicans, frigates, cormorants, and tropicbords. They have webbed feet and live in colonies. Boobies are able to plunge-dive and move underwater when fishing. The Blue Footed Booby is the most common. It lives 15-20 years. It nests on the ground and lays 2-3 eggs. Since the eggs hatch 5-7 days apart, the first hatched has an advantage over the other and, if food is scarce, the firstborn will kick its sibling out of the nest, where it will die quickly. |
