Friday, April 5, 2002, our fifth and sixth grade classes participated in the Level One Civic Oration Contest. This contest has a long history, dating back to its first event sponsored in 1948. Today the contest is an important event in many schools across the nation. It is designed to help students develop and exercise their public speaking skills. This year's topic is "What Makes the USA Great?"
Each participant choose how they wished to address the topic. Each speech had to be 3 to 5 minutes in length. No props, visuals or costumes were allowed. Points were awarded for material organization/adherence to topic (40 pts.), delivery and presentation (40 pts.), and overall effectiveness (20 pts.). Twelve finalists participated in Friday's event. The winners of the April 5th Level One competition went on to the Level Two Civic Oration Contest which was held in Rock Island, Illinois. The finalists presented their speeches in front of a panel of judges and competed with other Level One winners representing other schools. Caleb Garrision, Michael Kerres, and Dustin Kirkpatrick (6th grade) represented Thomas Jefferson School at the Level Two finals. Caleb Garrison placed in the Level two event and will now go on to the Level Three competition. Way to go Caleb! Nice job!
