Music Curriculum
for
Thomas
Jefferson Elementary
The music
curriculum for the students of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
is based on standards set forth for fine arts by the State of
Illinois, but more closely resembles standards established by
the Goals 2000 initiative adopted by congress in 2000.
Goals 2000
mandated that a set of national standards be adopted for the teaching
of math, language arts, science, social studies and the fine arts.
States followed suit and developed their own standards to fit
within these national guidelines.
The national
goals for music were created by the Music Educators National Conference
(MENC), a professional organization for musicians and music teachers.
The national standards are as follows:
1. Children shall sing, alone
and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Children shall perform on
instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
3. Children shall improvise melodies,
variations, and accompaniments.
4. Children shall compose and
arrange music within specified guidelines.
5. Children shall read and notate
music.
6. Children shall listen to,
analyze and describe music.
7. Children shall evaluate music
and music performance.
8. Children shall understand
relationships between music, the other arts and disciplines outside
the arts.
To this
end the music staff of Thomas Jefferson strive to provide a balanced
curriculum sung singing, playing of instruments, listening and
history so that all students may learn to love and appreciate
all types of music.
